Ancelotti excited by Flamini

July 26, 2008

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has hailed the impact of new signing Mathieu Flamini.

The France international signed a four-year contract earlier this summer following a move to Italy from Arsenal.

Flamini made his Rossoneri debut in Thursday’s 0-0 pre-season friendly draw against Cremonese, and Ancelotti was delighted with what he saw.

“Flamini is a complete player,” said the Milan coach. “He can be useful to us in defence and in attack.

“He makes few mistakes and for those who don’t know him he is a positive prospect. But for those of us who already know him he represents a certainty.”

The 24-year-old midfielder was also satisfied with his performance in his first game for the Rossoneri.

“Everything went well,” said Flamini. “I had no problems on the pitch and I am happy.

“This was my first game with Milan and I hope it will be the first of many.”

FC Zenit Fined

July 26, 2008

UEFA on Thursday fined Russian club FC Zenit St. Petersburg 60,000 Swiss francs (36,880 euros) after its Control and Disciplinary Body ruled some of the club’s fans had racially abused players from French side Marseille in last season’s UEFA Cup clash.

The pair met in the last-16 and in the second-leg match in Russia on March 12 some home fans racially abused the visitors.

Marseille’s Ronald Zubar told French radio after the game that “they threw a banana at us and made monkey noises” while he and black squadmates Charles Kabore and Andre Ayew were warming up.

“The spectators looked at us, openly making monkey noises.”

Zenit, who went on to win the competition, rejected wrongdoing and insisted it was “opposed to all forms of racism.”

Rovers sign Robinson

July 26, 2008

Blackburn Rovers have today confirmed the signing of Tottenham Hotspur Goalkeeper, Paul Robinson. The purchase costing a total of £3.5M (£3,500,000) means the the Lancashire club are likely to sell Brad Friedel with interest from Manchester United, Aston Villa and other clubs. Although Aston Villa are hot favourites to sign the American keeper.

The 28-year-old Robinson will be hoping for a fresh start at Ewood Park after a remarkable fall from grace at White Hart Lane which started when he was dropped as England’s number one, and ended with his first-team spot under Juande Ramos threatened by Radek Cerny and summer signing Heurelho Gomes.

Ronaldhino and Kaka - Dream team of the past?

July 26, 2008

It is all change at Milan as Zambrotta, Flamini and Ronaldinho join the slightly aging stars at the San Siro.

The question on everyone’s lips in Milan and in West London is, “Will Kaka be with the new men or will Chelsea’s world record pursuit of him be successful?”

Ronaldinho says that he hopes Kaka stays for a long while as they would, “Have fun together.”

With Ronaldinho’s love of the playboy lifestyle and Kaka’s well known strict religious beliefs, one can only assume that the new boy from Barcelona is talking about having fun on the pitch!

Certainly, if both players could recapture their form of the past then they would provide a pretty formidable double act. The fact is that neither player has shown anything like their best in the past twelve months.

Milan coach Carlos Ancellotti is certain that he can get the best out of these players, describing Ronaldinho as a phenomenon and Kaka as being very happy and relaxed where he is.

Do Chelsea need Kaka? Well, the player at his best would enhance and improve any side, but the player of last season would probably struggle to dislodge Michael Ballack, Michael Essien, Deco and Frank Lampard from the Chelsea starting line-up.

I think Kaka should stay where he is and see if he and Ronaldinho can bring the best out of each other. If they can, it’ll be worth watching.

Do you think they can recapture the glories of the past with each other’s help?

Torres wants Silverware

July 26, 2008

On his return from Euro 2008 yesterday Fernando Torres has promised to win trophies for Liverpool this season.

He was commenting on the fact that the trophy he won with Spain at Euro 2008 was the first and he added that he hoped that it wouldn’t be the last either.

The twenty four year old who scored thirty three goals during the 2007/8 campaign praised his manager Rafa Benitez for the assistance that he gave him in his development during the season which went a long way to assisting him and Spain to win the European Championship.

Torres concluded by saying that he was desperate for Liverpool to win their first of hopefully many trophies to come.
