Capello under probe

England football manager Fabio Capello has rocked the FA with the news he is under investigation in Italy for alleged tax evasion.

The probe - which had been kept secret - centres on the 61-year-old's recent spell in charge at Juventus.

It is apparently linked to the infamous bribes scandal which rocked Italian football.

In 2006 Juventus were demoted to Serie B after being found guilty by the country's football authorities of match-fixing.

It was said the club had bribed match officials to give decisions in the team's favour.

The revelation that Capello is caught up in a fraud inquiry comes just over a fortnight after he officially started as England manager.

The Football Association, who appointed him after sacking Steve McClaren, say he has assured them his tax affairs are in order.
FA spokesman Adrian Bevington said: "It's our understanding that the Italian tax authorites are currently following a procedure of looking into the finances of numerous high profile individuals.
"We have spoken to Fabio and his advisors about the newspapers reports in Italy and they've explained the facts.
"They have also given their assurances that Fabio's tax payments are in order. The FA has no further comment."

According to the Il Giornale newspaper, investigators are looking at a complex web of offshore companies set up by Capello and his sons Pierfilippo and Edoardo.

No details of the sums involved were given but the paper's website said the inquiry had been launched in "great secrecy" by the Turin public prosecutor Raffaele Guariniello several months ago.

Guariniello is the man who investigated allegations of doping by Juventus players during the 1990's.

Il Giornale said authorities were looking at sponsorship money paid to Capello through the Capello Family Trust which is registered in Guernsey.
It is claimed tax allegedly owed on the payments has not been handed over.
