Remote XT is a new service which causes a stolen cell phone to emit a loud scream noise, and otherwise completely disables the cell phone. It also puts a text message on the screen which says “this phone is stolen”. The only way to stop the screaming noise is to remove the battery, at which point, of course, the stolen phone is completely useless.
Remote XT is compatible with many makes of cell phone and many carriers. The service is intended to make the stolen phone so useless that there is no chance of the thief being able to sell it on the black market, the street corner, or eBay.
“By making mobiles unusable to anyone but the rightful owner, the phones become worthless and we’ll see the market for stolen handsets stamped out once and for all,” said Mark Whiteman, Managing Director of Remote XT. “Theft proof phones spell disaster for the huge criminal industry that has profited from mobile theft for too long.”
In addition to rendering your stolen cell phone useless to the thief, Remote XT performs a daily backup of all of the data on your cell phone, including your address book, photos, and even MP3s. Once called into action if your phone is stolen, Remote XT wipes all of the data from the stolen cell phone, while retaining it on the Remote XT system so that you can quickly restore all of your data to a replacement phone.
Now for the bad news. Remote XT is currently available only in the UK, however the carriers with whom it currently works include T-Mobile, and so expect to see it in the U.S. sooner rather than later.
