World Cup GERMANY 2006 - Group F

Group F :

Brazil

Carlos Alberto Parreira (BRA coach)
Virtually it seems to be an easy group but practically it isn't. This is a group whose main qualities are physical strength and tactical obedience. Croatia are a team who mix strength and quality. Australia play with a 4-4-2 formation, while Japan have speed. I have no doubt the most difficult group is Argentina, after that England comes against Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago and Sweden.

Croatia

Zlatko Kranjcar (CRO coach)
I'm not unhappy with the group. First of all, I must say that Brazil, as holders, are favourites not only in our group but for the World Cup overall. We played them not that long ago in Split and showed how good we are by earning a draw against the current world champions. I'm also certain that we will be worthy opponents for Brazil in the World Cup, thanks to the quality of our play, our motivation and our individual skills, which we showed in the qualifiers. We are hoping for a positive result, which means we want to avoid defeat. But even if we do lose, we will still have two games left against Australia and Japan to progress further. And I think that we are better than those two teams. We will be playing a tournament in Hong Kong at the end of January and also a friendly against Austria. In May, we will start to prepare for the World Cup, and that will include a game against Romania and possibly Portugal. I will obviously be travelling around a great deal to watch the individual squad members and evaluate how well they are playing. Our greatest strength is our team work. We have a solid team, which can play well tactically and can also look for a result. We can be optimistic about the World Cup.

Australia

Guus Hiddink (AUS coach)
Brazil are definitely favourites, there's no getting round that fact. It's tough finding the right tactics against them, as they have unbelievable individual class, and they can wrap up a match at any moment. But I reckon the other teams in the group are all about the same level. I believe nothing will be finally decided until the last group matches. But we're obviously not going there believing we're destined to lose. We're only just in the top 50 in the world ranking, but we're always capable of springing a surprise, and we're determined. Naturally, we're realists as well. But there's no point coming over all shy and retiring at the World Cup. We proved we're capable of strong performances in the play-offs. Japan have rebuilt their team a little since the 2002 World Cup. You're always impressed by Croatian teams and their technical ability. They play with a lot of passion, so it's always difficult against them. We'll play a few friendlies before the World Cup, but we still have to finalise our plans. I'm happy with Kaiserslautern, Stuttgart and Munich as our venues. It's good to play in the south, it's a nice area.

Japan

Zico (JPN coach)
I think it's better to face Brazil in this stage of the tournament than in the knock-out stages. I think that whoever wants to win the World Cup has to be ready for everything. Japan will be prepared to face any team. During the draw, the only thing I didn't want was to be placed in Argentina's group which is an extremely hard section. But now I am going to think about Australia. It is important to start well. Brazil is the last match. I won't think about that right now.

AUSTRALIA :

Australia's Aloisi set to miss Greece friendly

John Aloisi, whose penalty earned Australia their first place at a World Cup finals for 32 years, is set to miss the Socceroos' final home warm-up match before the team heads out to Germany.

The 30-year-old Alaves striker limped out of a training session on Monday with a foot injury and is poised to join Harry Kewell and Tim Cahill among the absentees for Thursday's 95,000 sell-out match against Greece at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

'I'm quite positive I won't be able to play on Thursday,' the former Coventry and Portsmouth striker told Australian Associated Press.

Aloisi struck the decisive penalty in November as Australia pipped Uruguay for a place in the finals in a dramatic shootout after their two-leg qualifying matches finished at 1-1.

Aloisi initially feared he had aggravated a foot injury sustained while playing for Alaves in the penultimate round of matches in the Primera Liga.

But after treatment with Australia team physiotherapist Les Gelis, Aloiso was confident he would be fit for the warm-up matches in Europe next month.

'It should be alright for the Holland trip, which is important because I don't want to get any further injury before I go away,' Aloisi said.

The 23-man squad, minus Kewell who is undergoing treatment for a groin strain in England, will fly to Europe on Friday for tune-up matches against the Netherlands in Rotterdam (June 4) and Liechtenstein in Ulm, Germany (June 7).

Everton's Cahill has already been ruled out of Thursday's farewell match against the Greeks but trained with his team mates on Monday and reported promising progress with his knee injury.

'I've been working really hard on it and I'm more than hopeful it will be okay by the time we get to (the Netherlands) for the camp,' Cahill said.

Australia have been drawn in Group F at the World Cup finals alongside champions Brazil, Croatia and Japan.

BRAZIL :

Recovered Ronaldo ready to roll

Brazil striker Ronaldo has recovered from the nagging thigh injury which forced him to miss the last six weeks of the Spanish season, coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said on Tuesday.

Parreira intends to field Ronaldo in Brazil's opening World Cup match against Croatia on June 13, even though the 29-year-old will only regain full match fitness during the tournament.

'It seems that Ronaldo is better, he's been working with the ball and doing exercises of medium intensity,' Parreira told reporters on Tuesday.

'Ronaldo has been running and he just needs to regain match fitness. His weight is perfect.'

Ronaldo was plagued by a string of minor injuries last season with Real Madrid whose fans believed he was overweight.

He last played in Real's 1-1 draw at home to Real Socieded on April 8 when he scored before limping off after an hour with an injury to his right thigh.

Parreira said he had no intention of resting Ronaldo from Brazil's two warm-up games against a local selection on May 30 and New Zealand in Geneva on June 4.

'He has to get rhythm and that's what the games are for,' said Parreira.

'Two games will not give you the ideal rhythm, this will happen only during the tournament. He will improve during the tournament.'

Re: World Cup GERMANY 2006 - Group F

JAPAN :

Japan beaten by Bulgars in Kirin Cup

Bulgaria struck in the opening and dying seconds to beat World Cup-bound Japan 2-1 in a Kirin Cup friendly on Tuesday.

Portsmouth's Svetoslav Todorov stunned Japan with a sharp near-post finish to put the visitors ahead just 53 seconds into the opening game of the three-team tournament.

Striker Seiichiro Maki equalised after 76 minutes, diverting a fierce drive from substitute Alex into the net from close range to boost his claims for a World Cup place after his third goal in eight games.

Substitute Hristo Yanev snatched a fortuitous winner for Bulgaria with a 30-metre free kick that evaded his team mates and crept inside goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi's far post.

Japan largely dominated after going behind with midfielder Yuki Abe forcing a tremendous save from Stoian Kolev and striker Keiji Tamada firing a left-foot shot against the post.

The Bulgarians, missing most of their regulars, face Scotland in Kobe on Thursday. Both teams failed to qualify for the World Cup in Germany.

Japan, without their Europe-based players for both games, take on Scotland in Saitama on Saturday in their final home match before leaving for Germany on May 26.

The game against the Scots will be Japan coach Zico's last chance to assess his players before the Brazilian names his World Cup squad on May 15.

The Asian champions play tournament hosts Germany in Leverkusen on May 30 and Malta in Dusseldorf on June 4 in their final two World Cup warm-up games.

Japan are drawn alongside holders Brazil, Australia and Croatia in Group F. They begin their campaign against Australia on June 12.
